I begin training for marathon #2 on June 19th. I'll be training for Rock and Roll Savannah (yay!). But before I start, I started a new kind of training. Weight training. Oh boy, its been a while! When I was a college student, I used to incorporate weights into my workout. Honestly, I wasn't diligent about it but I did use weights on a somewhat regular basis. I stopped using them once I left UTSA. So now my poor arms and back are WEAK. I get sore the day after every arms and back workout. I don't get sore when I lift with my legs but that's because they're strong from running.
I can't wait til my arms get used to lifting again. I don't want to be body-builder looking but I would like some definition. In the mean time, I'll just have to deal with the achy feeling that follows each workout. Oh well. It'll be worth it when I look lovely in my tank tops.
Next topic, I found a charity that I want to volunteer with and possibly fundraise for! I got an email from Active.com about local running events. One of the events caught my eye. Its a 5k for Girls On The Run at Kate's Frosting. I followed a link to the Girls on The Run web page and fell in love with their cause. Girls On The Run works with girls who are in 3rd through 8th grade. They promote being active and healthy so that the girls will be confident, healthy young women. I would love to coach or mentor girls. I've been wanting to volunteer with a charity since last year and this seems like just the group for me. The girls train for a 5k race so I'm sure I could accompany them on runs. I hope they respond to me. But even if they don't contact me about working with them, I may fundraise for the San Antonio chapter. The only thing that stopped me from signing up on the spot was that I couldn't decide what amount to raise. The minimum is $262 but I think I could pull off $500.
The reason why I haven't already done a major fundraising effort is that I haven't found a cause that's near and dear to my heart. I've donated to LLS and Livestrong numerous times. I've donated to St. Jude's and Autism orgs. They are all important and beautiful causes. I have nothing but respect and admiration to those to fundraise money for those groups. But those causes aren't personal to me. I will only fundraise when I find the cause and organization that really speaks to me. I may have found that group. I guess I'll just have to wait and see. I am quite hopeful though!
