Why Do I Run?

  • It makes me grateful for every day of my life.
  • It has helped me learn to love and appreciate my body.
  • Just when I think "I can't", I do and I do it well.
  • I can clear my mind and release any anger, hurt, frustrations that I may be feeling.
  • It is a way of showing myself that I can do anything I set my mind to.
  • Running has shown my baby brother (who isn't actually a baby but he always will be to me) that he can do anything he sets his mind to.
  • My family loves to hear about my training adventures and cheering for me.
  • There's nothing like finishing a run. Regardless of how easy/hard it was, its always an accomplishment.

Training before marathon training

I begin training for marathon #2 on June 19th. I'll be training for Rock and Roll Savannah (yay!). But before I start, I started a new kind of training. Weight training. Oh boy, its been a while! When I was a college student, I used to incorporate weights into my workout. Honestly, I wasn't diligent about it but I did use weights on a somewhat regular basis. I stopped using them once I left UTSA. So now my poor arms and back are WEAK. I get sore the day after every arms and back workout. I don't get sore when I lift with my legs but that's because they're strong from running.

I can't wait til my arms get used to lifting again. I don't want to be body-builder looking but I would like some definition. In the mean time, I'll just have to deal with the achy feeling that follows each workout. Oh well. It'll be worth it when I look lovely in my tank tops.

Next topic, I found a charity that I want to volunteer with and possibly fundraise for! I got an email from Active.com about local running events. One of the events caught my eye. Its a 5k for Girls On The Run at Kate's Frosting. I followed a link to the Girls on The Run web page and fell in love with their cause. Girls On The Run works with girls who are in 3rd through 8th grade. They promote being active and healthy so that the girls will be confident, healthy young women. I would love to coach or mentor girls. I've been wanting to volunteer with a charity since last year and this seems like just the group for me. The girls train for a 5k race so I'm sure I could accompany them on runs. I hope they respond to me. But even if they don't contact me about working with them, I may fundraise for the San Antonio chapter. The only thing that stopped me from signing up on the spot was that I couldn't decide what amount to raise. The minimum is $262 but I think I could pull off $500.

The reason why I haven't already done a major fundraising effort is that I haven't found a cause that's near and dear to my heart. I've donated to LLS and Livestrong numerous times. I've donated to St. Jude's and Autism orgs. They are all important and beautiful causes. I have nothing but respect and admiration to those to fundraise money for those groups. But those causes aren't personal to me. I will only fundraise when I find the cause and organization that really speaks to me. I may have found that group. I guess I'll just have to wait and see. I am quite hopeful though!

Its been way too long

I have been a very bad blogger. I didn't write race reports for RnR San Antonio (my first marathon!) or Disney Princess Half. I'm going to be posting those reports soon so bear with me. You'll be going backwards through time.

Before I do my race reports, I'll catch you up on what I've been up to.

I just started training for RnR Savannah. I registered for the half marathon last summer but decided that I want it to be my second marathon. I've been lazy for months in terms of running so I basically started from scratch. In a way, I'm glad I am. Its making me fall in love with running again. I'm remembering what its like to get excited when reaching goals and beating old PRs. I'm also working on my form. Its time to clean it up. I was planning on doing Ragnar Chicago but had to drop out due to work commitment. I'm bummed out! I was lookig foward to meeting Jennifer, Courtney, Tara and others. I hope to see them in Savannah!

My next race will be the Chupacabras De La Noche 10k. I did it last year and had a lot of fun. I'm really looking forward to it. This time I will be better prepared by doing a few runs on the course so that I won't feel so surprised by the dips, rocks and tree roots on the trail. I haven't picked any other races but I'm sure I'll do another half marathon before I run my full in November. Perhaps I'll run the half I ran last year; the Leon Creek Greenway Half. Not sure. Either way, it'll be fun. I can't wait to get into the heart of my training

Interested in Ragnar Chicago?

I made plans last year to participate in Ragnar Chicago. Its a relay that goes from Madison, WI to Chicago, IL. Due to work issues, I had to drop out. My Ragnar buddies are now needing two runners to complete their team. Here is some info:

Runner 3: Leg 3 (4.9 miles), Leg 15 (5.4 miles), Leg 27 (6.1 miles). Total of 16.4 miles

Runner 8: Leg 8 (6.7 miles), Leg 20 (2.5 miles), Leg 32 (9.9 miles). Total of 19.1 miles

Registration is $90

Hotel for overnight stay in Madison is $35

Van rental is $35

You'll probably need a little extra pocket money for food, gas, etc.

I don't want to scare anyone off by listing the prices of all this stuff but its good to know up front how much this will cost you. The dates are June 10th and 11th but you'll probably need to take the 9th off from work for travel unless you live in Madison or the surrounding area.

Please help out if you can! These ladies are all lots of fun and super sweet. I met Jennifer and the other ladies through Twitter. They are all amazing. Please message me for info and I'll get you in contact with Jennifer. Thanks in advance!

Less than a week away from my first marathon

How do I feel? In a nutshell, I'm alternating between nervous breakdown mode and being completely and truly excited.

I decided to run a marathon at the end of January 2010. When I signed up I thought to myself that I have TONS of time to train and that I couldn't wait for race day. Time went by very quickly. February sped by and before I knew it, April was upon me. The summer was gone in the blink of an eye and October seemed non-existant. Now, November 14th is days away. Do I wish I had more time to train? Yes and no. On one hand, more time to train would give me time to get in another 20 mile run. Those super long runs are great confidence boosters. On the other hand, it would give me more time to panic and let the self-doubt seep in just a bit more. Its time to rip off the band-aid and get moving!

I'm still trying to decide on a race day outfit. I want to wear my black lululemon shorts but I worry that I'll get too cold. I have black cropped pants that would work for me but what if I get too hot? I've heard that the humidity on this course is brutal. I don't want to keel over half way through due to heating issues. I'm pretty sure I'm going to go with the shorts. I'll freeze my butt off waiting in my corral but oh well. I plan on wearing a short-sleeved tech teee. I think it will be light enough to prevent me from getting too hot but will keep me warm at the start. I'm a weenie about being cold.

I'm as ready as I can be. All I can do at this point is hope for a good race day and good weather. I would love it if there is a slight breeze in the air. As far as goal time, I don't have one. I plan on letting myself enjoy the experience and promised myself that I will be proud and happy no matter what my time is. I'll worry about sub-4 on my next marathon. This one is my first so I don't want to taint the memory with any kind of disappointment or "I wish I had..." nonsense. Don't get me wrong. I like the thrill of finishing a race with a fast time. I just believe that few life experiences are unburdened by expectation. I choose to make this experience an expectation-free one. Who knows? Maybe I'll suprise myself and finish sooner than I think I will.

I wish the best of luck to all those who will be at Rock and Roll San Antonio and those who will be doing any other race this weekend. I hope everyone has a good race day and will look back on it as fondly as I will. I'll post my race review on either Monday or Tuesday.

My New Shorts

I bought these shorts with a Lululemon gift card that I got for my birthday (among other things) and since I love them so much I wanted to review them. This is the Lululemon Run: Fast short. If you follow me on twitter than you know that I love Lululemon. I go there on Saturday mornings for yoga whenever possible. These shorts are by far my favorite purchase so far.
I wore them on a short 5 miler and loved how comfortable they were. The waist band didn't dig in and they didn't ride up. They are short so if you're modest you may want to try them on to be sure that you're comfortable in them. They wick away sweat and have a coolmax liner. My one criticism is that there is a key pocket but I think its way too small to be functional. I use a SPI belt so I didn't fret over it too much but I think that the pocket should be bigger. All in all, a good trial run. I wanted to wait until I ran a long run to judge whether or not I could use them for my October half or even my November full.
Long run review: I loved them still. They stayed in place and the flat seams kept me from getting chafed. The waist band didnt' move an inch which I think is due to the drawstring in the front of the shorts. I feel like I'm not wearing anything at all when I run in these shorts. I will definitely be using them for my half and depending on the success of my next training runs I will use them for my first marathon. I have a feeling that they will pass the test though.
What shorts do you recommend? My second favorite pair of shorts is a pair of black Nike tempo shorts.
In other news, its finally football season! *jumps for joy* I am a proud Colts fan and look forward to watching the games post-long run. Its the perfect long run treat! I will also be cheering for my brother's high school football team. He's a senior so I'm going to go to as many of his games as I can. Last year I bought really pretty navy blue and gold football beads so I will rock those on Friday nights. I'm already looking forward to his team's tailgate party in November. I'm going to make a very large amount of jello shots.
Running music: I found a good song to run to. I had my iPod on random when "All Downhill From Here" by Newfound Glory came on. Its a *perfect* hard run song so I immediately added it to the run playlist. My favorite "run faster!" songs are "Don't Leave Me" by Blink 182 and "Sex Type Thing" by Stone Temple Pilots. No matter what mood I'm in those songs will always make me move faster.
Oh and in case you missed my twitter mention, I got a bike! I haven't taken it out for a ride yet though. I know this sounds stupid but I'm scared I'll fall off or something. The last time I rode a bike was when I was 12! They say you never forget how to ride but if anyone can forget its me. I need a bit of encouragement to convince me to get on it and go.
That's all for now!
